Opening Keynote: Deborah Peart
Monday July 15, 2024 9:00am - 10:45am MDT
Let's kick off HIVE with OUR Community! Hear from Open Up Resources organization leaders, and engage in an amazing keynote from Deborah Peart. Deborah is the founder and CEO of My Mathematical Mind. As an elementary educator for over 30 years, she speaks on various topics related to math identity, math content, instructional practices, and literacy connections to mathematics. Deborah recognizes that many students, educators, and parents have unaddressed math trauma and varying levels of anxiety when it comes to mathematics. Blending her training in yoga and mindfulness with mathematics instruction, Deborah advocates for a mindful approach to teaching mathematics to address math anxiety, build confidence, and support the development of positive math identities. She has dedicated her career and doctoral studies to supporting educators with innovative teaching strategies that allow students to be curious problem-solvers and see themselves as assets to the learning community. Deborah believes all children deserve joyful math experiences and the opportunity to become competent readers, writers, and mathers.

Beyond Buying the Book: Using PLCs to Leverage Curriculum-Based Professional Learning
Monday July 15, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm MDT
Research tells us that the instructional materials teachers use with their students can dramatically accelerate learning. The adoption of high-quality instructional materials presents a unique opportunity to empower educators to use the curriculum as one of many tools for equity in the classroom. However, if the adoption and implementation of high-quality instructional materials occur without a deep and nuanced understanding of a system’s unique context, there is a real danger of the initiative passing without making a significant impact. Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) can help to create opportunities for collaborative intellectual preparation to support system-wide curriculum implementation and coherence, beyond just “buying the book.”

In this session, NTC will spotlight the work it has done with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) and Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) to create equitable learning environments by supporting teachers to leverage the curriculum through student-centered pedagogy. We will dig deeper into the professional learning community structures and routines that support curriculum rollout and ensure a coherent student experience with the content. Session attendees will learn what it looks like in practice for school, district, and instructional leaders to build a collective understanding of curriculum content and monitor the progress of implementation and instructional delivery,
and how they can apply these strategies in their own context.

Have you ever felt like, "I am asking the questions, but then get crickets," or think, "There has to be a better way to get students to (go deeper into content, speak more, listen better, or ???)."? In this session, we will unpack five key strategies that shift classrooms from good to great. Participants will leave with key takeaways that increase student interactions and teacher excitement-- and can be implemented starting on day one of school.

Understanding How the Shifts are Alive in the EL Education K–8 Language Arts Curriculum
Monday July 15, 2024 2:15pm - 3:45pm MDT
The instructional shifts of literacy are the breath and life behind all college and career readiness standards. Having high-quality instructional materials is the first step, but understanding each shift in depth, noting what it should look like in a thriving classroom and how those materials are built from these shifts along with what they look like in our daily instruction will take our curriculum and instruction to the next level. The shifts are shifts we must see not only from our students but from our teachers and the materials they use. Understanding the shifts and how the EL curriculum was designed with these in mind will allow us to place more of the why behind our beautiful work.

Art Meditation in the Self-Care Suite
Tuesday July 16, 2024 4:00pm - 4:45pm MDT
This class starts with a grounding meditation and some deep breathing and moves into a guided art lesson that allows you to free your feelings with every stroke of the brush or line of the pencil.
You don’t have to be good at art or even creative to participate - as mastery of the art isn’t the goal of this class. This class is a way to relax and calm your brain. To give yourself a little slice of peace in your hectic schedule. Think of it as yoga for your brain. All skill levels are welcome. No prior art experience is required. All needed materials are provided.

Keynote: Lacey Robinson
Wednesday July 17, 2024 9:00am - 10:15am MDT
Welcome to the last day of HIVE, OUR Community! Hear from Open Up Resources organization leaders, and engage in an inspiring keynote from Lacey Robinson.

Lacey Robinson is the president and CEO of UnboundEd, and the chair of the Board of CORE Learning. As CEO, Robinson sets the organization’s vision for transforming instruction for students at the margins. She is a former teacher, principal, and professional development specialist who has focused on literacy, equity, and school leadership for more than 25 years. Her life’s work aims to enable educators to disrupt systemic inequities in their school districts and classrooms.

As CEO of UnboundEd, Robinson is responsible for overseeing UnboundEd’s health, sustainability, and vision for how engaging, affirming and meaningful grade-level teaching can transform teachers’ experiences and student learning. In 2022, she also led the merger of UnboundEd, Pivot Learning, and CORE Learning under the UnboundEd banner — creating the nation’s largest K–12 educator development organization focused on improving teaching and learning for underserved students.

Robinson is a leading national voice on disrupting the predictability of students’ educational outcomes, and was named to 2023’s Forbes 50 Over 50 list in recognition of her innovative leadership. Her new book, Justice Seekers: Pursuing Equity in the Details of Teaching and Learning, released in July 2023, is a love letter to teachers inspiring us all to recognize that “justice is found in the details of teaching and learning®.” She frequently serves as a keynote speaker and is featured on Emily Hanford’s 2022 “Sold a Story” podcast.

She is a proud graduate of Florida A&M University and Teachers College, Columbia University.
